Grants

Who can apply?

Dutch-speaking literary authors, cartoonists, illustrators, poets; members or aspirant members of Sabam who can present proof of their literary activity in the form of earlier publications, whether or not self-produced.

 

Award conditions:

  • Membership or application for membership of Sabam on receipt of the grant application.
  • Already have the required number of publications according to the grant category (recognised publisher or self-produced)
  • The same author can only submit 1 application every 2 years
  • The same literary work can only receive one grant, they cannot be combined

 

Submission of the dossiers:

  • The application can be made at any time (pay attention to the closing dates) and if admissible, will be investigated by the respective commission.
  • Annual closing dates for applications: 30 April and 31 October

 

Practical candidature

After our confirmation of the admissibility of the grant application in which the applicant mails his claim and annexes, the candidate will be asked to send his dossier in quadruplicate (both on paper and electronically) to the attention of: Tania Ghyselinck, name of the specific grant, Aarlenstraat 75-77, 1040 Brussels. tania.ghyselinck@sabam.be

 

Composition of the dossier

  • A letter in which the author presents and gives reasons for his application and states which specific grant he is applying for
  • Artistic CV or biography
  • Bibliography
  • Publishing house(s)
  • Identification data: Surname, first name, postal address, date of birth, e-mail address, mobile phone number, account number, national registry number + copy of identity card
  • Except for the first grant: Manuscript or cartoon scenario (in progress)
  • For the first grant: Type of support requested and details of location and concept
  • For possible accounting follow-up: Bank document with IBAN code and exact details of the account

 

 Payment

The grant is paid in one amount within thirty (30) working days of the decision by the advisory committee. On publication of the supported work, the author undertakes to mention the support of Sabam on or in the work. If this obligation is not observed, any subsequent application for a grant will be automatically declared inadmissible.

Grant “Participation on invitation or nomination book fair/festival/competition/foreign prize” (max. 2 per year)

Support for participation on invitation/nomination in a literary festival or book fair abroad (travelling expenses, promotion, etc.)
(e.g. Frankfurter Buchmesse, Bologna Children's Book Fair, Angoulême International Comics Festival, long-list nominees for literature prizes in the Netherlands, etc.)

Amount: EUR 800

Criteria:

  • min. 2 publications in CV (whether or not self-produced)
  • max. 1 application every two years by the same author

 

“Literary non-fiction creation” grant (max.: 1 per year)

Support for the costs associated with the production of a non-fiction work “in progress”, (research, travel, etc.)

Amount: EUR 1000

Criteria:

  • min. 2 publications in CV
  • max. 1 application every two years by the same author
     

Return conditions: Mentioning of Sabam in the publication

 

“Literary fiction creation (fiction for both children and adults)” grant (max. 2 per year)

Amount: EUR 1000

Support for the costs associated with the production of a fiction work “in progress”, (research, travel, etc.)
Criteria:

  • min. 2 publications in CV
  • max. 1 application every two years by the same author

Return conditions: Mentioning of Sabam in the publication

 

“Literary poetry creation” grant (max. 1 per year)

Amount: EUR 500

Support for the costs associated with the production of a collection of poems,

Criteria:

  • min. 2 publications in CV
  • max. 1 application every two years by the same author

Return conditions: Mentioning of Sabam in the publication

 

“OF cartoon pitch creation” grant (max. 2 per year)

Amount: EUR 1500

Support for the costs associated with the production of a cartoon by the scriptwriter and cartoonist (joint dossier), OF support for the production of the storyboard, e.g. a scriptwriter who joins up with a cartoonist to pitch a storyboard with a potential publisher or other partner

Criteria:

  • min. 1 publication in CV
  • max. 1 application every two years by the same author
