Radio

If you have a private radio station, then Sabam offers you a licensing agreement with which you as a broadcaster can make free use of our repertoire. In return for the licence you pay authors' royalties and deliver the playlists.

The amount to be paid depends on your potential audience and your income. In concrete terms you pay a percentage of your turnover coupled to a minimum remuneration. Our definition of 'income' is based on the definition of the '"financial means of radio broadcasters" contained in the Royal Decree of 9 March 2003 concerning the equitable remuneration due from the radio broadcasters.

For stations with a small potential audience and low turnover, only a lump sum is charged in relation to the weekly broadcasting schedule. For the more commercial radio stations the calculation is based on their earnings. Whenever we speak of earnings here we mean the gross income without deduction of agency costs, commissions or other costs.

A royalty of 2.8% is charged on the first 8% proportion of the earnings and then a collection rate of 1.5% is levied on the income exceeding a given threshold. Both the threshold and the minimum royalty is determined per radio station and indexed every year.

The same tariff applies irrespective of whether it is a local, regional or national station.

Web radio

The royalty to be paid by web radio stations is determined on the basis of the income and the maximum number of simultaneous streams.

The royalty consists – as with the private radio stations – of a percentage based on the earnings coupled to a minimum royalty. The percentage applied to web radio stations is 2.8% on all income generated via the web radio.
