Do I need permission to record a cover version of a song?

That depends on how you intend to use the cover. In many cases, you will need permission from the rights holders, but not always.
  • No changes + authors' rights managed by Sabam (or another collective management organisation)
If you do not make any changes to the music or lyrics, you generally do not need additional permission to share your cover on platforms such as YouTube or Spotify, or to perform it live.

  • Use in a film, TV series or advertisement
If you wish to use your cover in a film, TV series or advertising commercial, you must obtain permission from the rights holders.
  • Changes made to the work or rights not managed by a collective management organisation
If you modify the work, or if the authors' rights are not managed by an organisation such as Sabam, you must always obtain permission from the rights holders.

Please note: the original author retains their moral rights. They may object to your cover if it harms their reputation or the integrity of their work.
