When do you receive your payments?

As soon as we know where and how your work has been used, we calculate your royalties and pay them out to you. The timing and details vary by discipline, but one thing remains the same: we ensure that your earnings are paid to you accurately and transparently.

On average, 85% of the amounts collected are distributed to rights holders. Sabam is a nonprofit organization: the remaining 15% covers operating costs, so that we can process your rights efficiently and distribute the revenue correctly.

Your income at a glance
You can earn royalties from various types of use, such as:
online use (streaming, platforms, social media)
radio and television
live (performances, shows, events)
publications and reproduction
international use
statutory fees (such as for copies or public lending rights)
How do your creations generate income?

Whenever your work is used, it can generate royalties. The amount you receive depends on how your work is used and on your share in it.

Here's how it works:

  • We collect royalties from the users of your work.

  • The income generated is allocated to the creators and rights holders involved.

  • You receive your share, after deduction of administrative costs and any statutory withholdings.

The more frequently your work is used, the greater its potential to generate income.

Payment Schedule
Receiving your earnings

As your work generates income, we process and pay it out at fixed moments throughout the year.

The timing depends on the type of rights and the way your work is used.

Find the payment schedule for your discipline:

Payout Threshold

To avoid very small payments and administrative hassle, we use a payout threshold. Your royalties are automatically accumulated and paid out as soon as the total amount reaches at least €25.

What if you don’t reach that threshold right away?
Don’t worry: your royalties are preserved and will continue to accrue.

If you don’t reach €25 during the year, we’ll still pay out the amount in December. So you’ll never lose any income.

International revenue

Your rights are also protected abroad

Is your work used outside of Belgium? If so, you’ll also receive international copyright royalties.

How does that work?
  1. A foreign authors' association collects the royalties
  2. The amounts are transferred to Sabam
  3. Sabam processes them and distributes the payments
Why international payments might take longer

Foreign authors' associations all operate according to their own rules, rates, and payment schedules. As a result, international royalties may be received later than Belgian ones.
