Why get a license?
Behind every creation - music, movies & TV shows, theater & dance, visual & fine arts, and literature - are creators: authors, composers, and publishers. They make a living from their creations.
If you use their creations outside of a private setting - in your business, during an event or performance, in a podcast, or on your products - they are entitled to compensation in exchange for the use of their work.
With a license from Sabam or Unisono, you can handle the creators’ copyrights. That way, you don’t have to contact and compensate every author, composer, and publisher individually. Convenient, right?
What happens to the money?
With a license, you provide fair compensation to the creators of your favorite works for the use of their creations. Because for every euro you invest, 85% goes to the creators .
The remaining 15% covers Sabam’s operating costs. We use this to ensure your application is processed smoothly and the funds are distributed correctly.
This ensures that authors, composers, and publishers have the financial resources to continue investing in the creation of new works. And you benefit from that, too. It’s a win-win!
Copyright
Copyright law stipulates that authors, composers, and publishers are entitled to compensation when their work is used in public. For example, when you play music at your event or in your business, organize a film or theater performance, reproduce an image of a work of art, or recite a text. If all the creators of a work have been deceased for more than 70 years, you no longer have to pay copyright royalties.
The creators of the work determine the compensation they charge for the use of their creation. In practice, however, most authors, composers, and publishers entrust the management of their rights to a copyright collective such as Sabam.
As members (and shareholders) of Sabam, they approve the rates that the association applies for the use of their creative works.
